Moose Wala was shot dead by unidentified assailants on 29 May 2022; a Canada-based gangster, active in Punjab, claimed responsibility for the killing, which the police said was a culmination of inter-gang rivalry.[11] On 23 June 2022, his first posthumous single, \"SYL\", was released.

Three of his songs also featured on Billboard Global Excl. US chart, \"The Last Ride\" peaked at 103, \"295\" peaked at 73, and \"Levels\" peaked at 195.[62]

Moose Wala made his debut in Punjabi cinema in the film Yes I Am Student under his own production company Jatt Life Studios.[67] The film was directed by Tarnvir Singh Jagpal and written by Gill Raunta.[68] In 2019, Moose Wala appeared in Teri Meri Jodi.[69] In June 2020, he announced another film titled Gunah.[70] On 22 August 2021, he released the teaser of his upcoming movie, Moosa Jatt, starring Sweetaj Brar and directed by Tru Makers.[71] On 24 August 2021, he announced his new film Jattan Da Munda Gaun Lagya, directed by Amberdeep Singh, which was set for release on 18 March 2022.[72]

On 3 December 2021, Moose Wala joined the Indian National Congress to contest the 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly election.[104][105] Nazar Singh Manshahia, the Congress MLA from Mansa, revolted and opposed Moose Wala's candidacy.[106] Obtaining only 20.52% votes from the Mansa constituency, Moose Wala lost to Aam Aadmi Party's Vijay Singla by a margin of 63,323 votes.[107]

During the 2022 election, a case under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code was filed against Moose Wala for his violation of the election code of conduct. He had held a door-to-door campaign in the Mansa constituency after the end of the allowed duration of the election campaign.[108]

Moose Wala was shot dead by unidentified assailants in his car on 29 May 2022 in Jawaharke village of Mansa district. According to police, the Lawrence Bishnoi gang initially claimed responsibility for the murder in an unverified Facebook post, which Bishnoi denied making,[114] but is being held by the Punjab Police as of June 2022 and is considered the \"mastermind\" by officials in the murder.[115][116]

According to the police, the Lawrence Bishnoi gang has claimed to kill Moose Wala to avenge the murder of an Akali leader, Vicky Middukhera, in 2021. Moose Wala's aide was purported by the Bishnoi gang of having a role in the killing of Middukhera, though there is no legal evidence to support this.[118] A Canadian gangster of Punjabi origin, identified as Satinder Singh alias Goldy Brar, claimed responsibility for the murder. Brar, a close associate of a gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, claimed that his \"Punjab Module\" (gang) carried out the shooting. Both Brar and Bishnoi have criminal cases against them in India. The Punjab police later confirmed Bishnoi's involvement.[124][125][126]

Before the Sangrur Lok Sabha by-polls in 2022, the Indian National Congress party had used pictures of Moose Wala in its election song. The family of Moose Wala made a public appeal to political parties and individuals, asking them to not use his name for political or personal motives. Tribune newspaper reported that this appeal came as a setback for the Congress party as it was intended to use the public sympathy over Moose Wala's death for electoral benefit in the by-polls.[145]

On November 2022, Nigerian artist Burna Boy met with Moosewala's parents for their blessings and offered his condolences. Chandigarh, December 26, 2022: The crime rate in Punjab has witnessed a sharp decline under the able administration of Chief Minister (CM) Bhagwant Mann-led state government and the supervision of Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav.

According to the official crime data of the state vis-a-vis its comparison with the figures from the previous year, the number of murders this year has reduced from 723 in 2021 to 654 in 2022 whereas kidnappings have decreased from 1787 in 2021 to 1645 in 2022.

Similarly, theft-related cases have also been reduced from 8417 in 2021 to 8407 in 2022, and cases related to the Excise Act have decreased from 10745 in 2021 to 9104 in 2022. The data also shows a significant decline in the total number of first information reports (FIRs) registered in the state from 73581 in 2021 to 71827 in 2022.

Recounting the achievements, Inspector General of Police (IG) Sukhchain Singh Gill on Monday said that during 2022, the Internal Security has busted 18 terror modules with the arrest of 119 terrorist/radicals after recovering 43 Rifles, 220 Revolvers/Pistols, 13 Tiffin Improvised Explosive Device (IEDs), 24.5Kg RDX and other explosives, 37 Hand Grenades, two Sleeves of disposed Rocket Launcher, 22 Drones, and 23 vehicles.

He said, similarly, the Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF), since its formation on April 6, 2022, has succeeded in busting 111 gangster/criminal modules after arresting 428 gangsters/criminals and neutralizing two, after recovering 411 weapons, 97 vehicles used in criminal activities, 44.21 KGs heroin and Rs 1.30 crores money.

The IGP said that from January 1 to December 20, 2022, five major incidents have taken place in Punjab including an IED blast at Police Post Kalwa, PS Noorpur Bedi, Ropar; RPG attack at Intelligence Headquarters building at Mohali; Murder of Punjabi Singer Shubhdeep Singh alias Sidhu Moosewala; Killing of Bargari sacrilege accused Pardeep Kumar and RPG attack at PS Sarhali, Tarn Taran. Punjab Police have effectively solved all these major crimes, he added.

Giving yearly updates on drugs, the IGP said that from January 1 to December 25, 2022, Punjab Police have arrested 16798 drug smugglers/suppliers, including 2316 big fish after registering 12171 first information reports (FIRs), including 1374 commercials.

According to the spokesman, the anti-terrorism watchdog has prepared an annual report by compiling the performance of the department during the year 2022.
